Exisiting Site

Presently, the proposed Town Center site is deserted and occupied by the ruins of industrial buildings, which remain on the site. Industrial activities altered the natural terrain, vegetation and affected the quality of soil. Over the years, however, a substantial portion of the surrounding land has recovered naturally with native vegetation.

The most prominent features reminiscent of the past are the lake, ruins of silos and roundhouse.

The lake that is located in the southern portion of the site, was originally a quarry.

The Basalt Rotunda is one of the structures constructed from reinforced concrete.

The Silos were used for storing Pozzolan (a volcanic rock) used as a drying agent. These structures are presently leaning and in a precarious state.

Most of these industrial structures were built with non-reinforced masonry that makes structures unstable over time. Hence, many of these buildings may not be suitable for habitation or preservation in the future.
